According to a New York daily newspaper: No longer will Sir Mix-A-Lot be "tired of magazines saying flat butts are the thing" because big butts are officially the thing (whatever that means).
The New York Daily News has reported that big butts are officially in, saying "Make way! Big bums are shaping up to be the summer of 2010's hottest trend." We're just wondering if they noticed we've had big butts the entire time.Since the day model Twiggy pushed out fuller-figured woman like Marilyn Monroe, big anything (besides boobs, of course) is mostly something mainstream culture snubs. Women in the media are expected to be thin. With all of the movie stars, fashion models and magazines bombarded at us every day, women also have an unrealistic example of what they're supposed to look like (this applies to more than just body type, but for the sake of this piece let's stick with that). Society can deny this practice by saying women shouldn't be affected by the aforementioned images, but the prevalence of eating disorders among young women is a testament to the unhealthiness of these unrealistic yet glorified images.
In 2001, Destiny's Child released 'Bootylicious,' marking a time that fuller-figured women made their way back into the public eye, and 'Bootylicious' was even added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2004. But if you think about it, the Destiny's Child crew -- Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle -- all have very different body types with curves in different places. So the real beauty of this song was that you were "bootylicious" whether skinny, short, tall, thick or with a big behind.
In 2010, "real" women like Serena Williams, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian are grabbing pop culture's attention.
According the Daily News article, Kim "lives constantly in the shadow of her voluptuous backside, but she's learned to love it." Last we checked, our butts weren't creating any metaphorical shadows (just real ones) and if they were blocking something, it was probably a doorway -- and whoever's waiting can hold on a second! We're glad the mainstream media is into the "butt," but we don't understand how a certain body part can be "in." What's next small hands? Big ears? Long calves? The photo caption in the article even says, "Kim Kardashian (l.) and Jennifer Lopez (r.) are both known for their bootylicious rear ends. Lucky for them, big butts are in this summer." Oh, lucky for them, because otherwise they should be ashamed!
Hey, Daily News, you know these women had "big rear ends" before this summer right?

Referencing celebrities, from Madonna's daughter Lourdes liking shorts that make her butt look big to Ice-Ts wife, Coco (she comes up in any ass conversation), the Daily News may have picked up on a change in what our society "accepts" -- it just didn't phrase it very eloquently.
Hopefully this marks a time not when a certain body part is the "hottest trend" but when we accept peoples' natural bodies. We can dream, can't we? Here at theBVX we've always liked big juicy butts (or however else your natural body is). Everyone else is just late to the party.
